Civil War in NE North Carolina

Burnside's Expedition and beyond

Col. James A. J. Bradford, 1st NC Artillery (10th NC Regiment)

Does anyone know where I could find a photo of Col. James A. J. Bradford? I cannot locate one online. He was commander of the NC Arsenal at Fayetteville, served on the Military Board under Warren Winslow, was captured at Hatteras on Aug 29, 1861, died in Fayetteville on Sep 6, 1863.

I've checked the NC Troops, Moore's, and Clark's NC Civil Wars series with no luck. Have you tried contacting Greg Mast? He published a book of NC Civil War photos several years ago:

State Troops and Volunteers, published by the N.C. Office of Archives and History

There is a copy in the Pasquotank County Library.

I checked with Greg Mast. He is not aware of any picture of Bradford existing.

Thanks Bruce. A friend of mine is working on a paper about the Fayetteville Arsenal and was hoping to include a photo of Bradford. Looks like no such luck.

On another note, my first book, Richard Gatlin and the Confederate Defense of Eastern North Carolina has just been published and is available at and as well as at a couple of bookstores in your area:

Page After Page Elizabeth City, NC

NC Museum Of History Association Elizabeth City, NC

I may be doing a book signing at Page After Page on May 2 if the publisher can finalize the arrangements.

I plan to buy the book. Mike Zatarga's book on the Battle of Roanoke Island is coming out from History Press soon as well. It is available for pre-ordering from Barnes and Noble. I wonder if Banks could set up a joint book signing at Page After Page? Mike lives about an hour away in Manteo. My friends Chris Meekins and Lee Oxford did signings there for their books from History Press.

Thanks Bruce. I have Lee Oxford's book and must order copies of Mike Zatarga's book and Chris's book. Mike's apparently won't be out until too late for the May 2 signing but I'm sure there will be other opportunities later. My sales rep working on my May 2 signing is Lizzy Nanney but Banks Smither did most of the pre-publication editing and admin.
